Alexander Kunz, 90, peacefully passed away during the night of Friday, June 21, 2024 at home with family by his side.
Al or Grandpa Al, as he was affectionately known, was born on February 18, 1934 in Milwaukee, WI to Alexander and Marie Sara (Schlundt) Kunz. He was a Waukesha High School graduate before enlisting in the Army. During his dedicated time of service, he proudly attained Corporal rank and served in the Korean War. He received the Army of Occupational Medal in Germany for his position as a M-1 Rifle Sharpshooter during the war. Al then began his career as a draftsman at Lindberg/Hevi-Duty, eventually working his way up to becoming a project manager and mechanical engineer. He also had quite the entrepreneurial spirit following his father’s footsteps in managing his own rental properties and was a landlord for most of his adult life until he passed.
Al continued his steadfast devotion to the community with his lifetime membership to St. Jerome Catholic Church in Oconomowoc. To his loved ones, Al was known as a caring family man who could bring a smile to the faces of any age with his clever sense of humor and character impressions. He passed on his fondness for cottage life to generations of family members with their “Summer Hummers.” He will always be remembered as a true lover of nature by his cherished time spent outside hunting and fishing, relaxing by the lake at the cottage, and grilling with a PBR close to him.
Al is survived by his wife of 70 years, Diana; their children Kim (Joel) Olstad, Kalen (Joe) Wells, Kari (Geoffrey) Miller, and Kevin (Rachel) Kunz; 19 grandchildren Jerel (Mary) Olstad, Torey (Kristin) Olstad, Lauren (Patrick Reeb) Olstad, Loni (Justin) McClellan, Kendra (Ryan) Phernetton, Emily (Michael) Skow, Sarah Wells, Katrina (Christopher) Mercer, Kristin (Aaron) Webber, Kimberly Miller, Geoffrey Miller II, Tray (Kate) Berry, Adam (Sammy Jo) Stone, Karly (Kevin) Gaulke, Logan (Mykah) Stone, Alexander (Emma) Kunz, Katherine (Michael) Harder, Karolynn (Max) Behrens, and Eric Kunz; 34 great grandchildren; and his beloved chihuahua companion Nala.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Karleen Stone, parents Alexander and Marie Kunz, brother Richard Kunz, and sister Patricia Monyelle.
A celebration of Al’s life will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 1-3 p.m. at Pagenkopf Funeral Home (2228 N. Silver Maple Lane, Oconomowoc, WI 53066) with a service to follow. Military honors will be held after the service to recognize Al’s service to his country.
Memorial contributions may be made to any of the following organizations: Wildlife in Need Center, Oconomowoc Food Pantry, St. Jude’s, or Stars and Stripes Honor Flight Wisconsin for Veterans.
