Carl Eugene Sternkopf, age 88 of Oconomowoc, formerly of Wauwatosa, peacefully passed away at home with his family by his side on September 20, 2011. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Helen Sternkopf (nee Porter), five daughters; Elizabeth Sternkopf of Hartland, WI, Margaret (the Reverend Doctor Donald) Stein of Onalaska, WI, Mary (Michael) Potratz of Watertown, WI, Karen Sternkopf of DePere, WI and Martha (Bruce) Schultz of Chanhassen, MN, brother; John Sternkopf of Milwaukee, WI. Carl is also survived by ten grandchildren; Rebecca, Karis, Christa, Marine Warrant Officer Erika, Donald, Byron, Peter, Andrew, Elisabeth, Claire, and also ten great-grandchildren; Lauren, Aneka, David, Abigail, Timothy, Josephine, Gianna, Heston, AJ, and Colette, along with many other relatives and friends. Carl was preceded in death by his brothers Albert and Richard Sternkopf, and parents Erich and Georgianna Sternkopf. Carl was a veteran of World War II and proudly served in the United States Navy. Carl enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and as a member of V12, sent to Columbia and Dartmouth Universities for Officer training. His ship assignment was the USS LSMR 524, which was later named the USS St. Croix River LSM(R)-524. Carl was honorably discharged in 1946. He was Past Master of Oconomowoc Masonic Lodge #42. He spent many years singing in the church choir and served as Junior and Senior Warden at Zion Episcopal Church in Oconomowoc. Carl, a lifelong dog lover, enjoyed the companionship of his furry friends; Triever, Boo-boo, Colonel, Bufty, Honey Bear, Smokey, Heidi, Kari, Lindy, Knuckles O'Toole, Chester and Tobey. A visitation for family and friends will be held at Pagenkopf Funeral Home on Friday, September 30, 2011 from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Funeral services at Zion Episcopal Church and burial at LaBelle cemetery are pending. Special thanks to Dr. Hansen and his staff the the Regional Cancer Center in Oconomowoc and the Aurora Visiting Nurses Association.
