Donald Paul Driftmier

DONALD P. DRIFTMIER, Delafield, died peacefully at home on January 11, 2012 at the age of 89. He was the loving, devoted husband of 58 years of Mary Beth (Schneider) Driftmier. Cherished father of Katharine (Wolfgang) Hoffmann, Paul (Cathy) Driftmier, Adrienne (Jeffrey) Widell, beloved grandpa of William, Daniel, Matthew, Joshua, Sarah, Paul, Max, Sydney, Jean, and Abigail, and great-grandpa of Alex. The youngest of seven, he is survived by brother Stephen Wayne Driftmier, sisters Dorothy Johnson and Margery Strom. Further survived by his sister-in-law Mae Driftmier, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Leanna (Field) Driftmier, his brothers Rev. Dr. Frederick Driftmier and Howard Driftmier, his sister Lucile Verness, and his grandson Matthew Miller. Raised in Shenandoah, Iowa, Don attended Park College, the U.S. Air Corps Meteorology School, earned his BSME from Iowa State University, and further studied Advanced Engineering Mathematics at Purdue University. A true patriot, he proudly served his country during both World War II and the Korean Conflict in the U. S. Air Force. His vocations included mechanical engineering at Guide Lamp Division of General Motors, teaching calculus and physics at Brookfield Academy, and machine designing at Klockner H & K, Waukesha. He enjoyed involvement in the lake country community as a Life Member of Delafield-Summit Lions Club, the Lake Country Congregational Church, the Delafield Community Fund Board, and the Board of Hawks Inn Historical Society. He was an avid, dedicated golf enthusiast with a particular fondness for the St. John's course. He hoped he had made a difference in his students' lives through his passion for mathematics, and in the lives of others battling prostate cancer through his participation in experimental treatments. His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 12:00 noon, at Lake Country Congregational Church in Hartland. Memorials may be made to L. C. C. Church or Lions Clubs International. Special thanks go out to his supportive medical team at U. of Wisc Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center-GU Oncology Program, the Aurora VNA of WI Hospice and Palliative Care, and the Visiting Angels of Pewaukee, WI.
