Dr. Orval L Hidde

Dr. Hidde was born December 22, 1928, Marion, Waupaca County, WI, son of William and Leona (Miller) Hidde. He married Vineta Ileen Carlin , Bryan, Ohio on July 19, 1953. Postsecondary education consisted of a B.A. degree in Biology from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. A magna cum laude doctorate in Chiropractic (D.C.) from the National College of Chiropractic, Chicago, Il and a doctorate in jurisprudence (J.D.) from the University of Wisconsin, In addition to post graduate certification in chiropractic physical therapy and nutrition. Dr. Hidde was a member of the faculty at National College of Chiropractic following graduation and opened his practice in Watertown in 1955. He retired from chiropractic practice in January, 2009. In addition he established a law practice in l969 and carried on a limited practice in several specialty areas. Dr. Hidde made major contributions to the advancement of the chiropractic profession in leadership positions on state, national and international levels during his career. He served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Wisconsin Chiropractors for ten years, as president, executive secretary, editor of its Journal and on numerous committees. He was named Wisconsin Chiropractor of the Year in l957. He served the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association in various capacities and received the W.C.A.’s 1973 President’s Award and its 1974 Outstanding Service Award. He was appointed by Governor Gaylord Nelson to the State Chiropractic Licensing Board. Dr. Hidde served the American Chiropractic Association’s Planning Commission and was chairman of its Nutrition Council. He was a member of its Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) and its Commission on Accreditation (COA) for twenty years, holding each of its officer positions at various times. As chairman of the Commission on Accreditation he played a pivotal role in obtaining initial recognition of that body by the United States Office of Education, Council on Post-secondary Accreditation and the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. Hidde became a nationally and internationally recognized expert on chiropractic education and accreditation and served as expert witness and advisor to licensing boards, legislatures, courts and attorney generals’ offices and numerous state and federal government bodies. He served as special legal counsel to the CCE and COA. He was twice named Chiropractor of the Year by the American Chiropractic Association in 1975 and received the Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 1980. He was listed in Who’s Who in Chiropractic & Who’s Who in American Law. He was a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors and the recipient of an honorary Doctorate in Humanities degree from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. He served as trustee and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National University of Health Sciences, Lombard, Il and received the University Presidents Award and Distinguished Service Award. He was one of four persons initially named to the Hall of Fame of the University. In 2006 he became the 25th international recipient of the prestigious Chiropractic Heritage Award of the Association of Chiropractic History. Internationally, Hidde served on the Committee on International Chiropractic Accreditation and as education and accreditation advisor to the Canadian Council on Chiropractic Accreditation, the Australasian Council on Chiropractic Education and the Anglo-European Council on Chiropractic Accreditation. Dr. Hidde served as a member of the Immanuel Church Council of Watertown and also as its president. He served St. Matthew‘s Lutheran Church of Oconomowoc as councilman and also as chairman of its Christian Day School Board. He was a member of a goodwill delegation of business and professional leaders to Europe and the Soviet Union in 1961. He was author of nineteen papers published in national chiropractic journals. He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association, Wisconsin Chiropractic Association, American Bar Association (Medicine & Law) and the Wisconsin Bar Association. Survivors include his wife, Vineta; son Hugh, Oconomowoc, daughters Katherine (Andrew) Cuneo, Oconomowoc, Mara Lisa (Pastor Eric) Ziecker, Rio Rancho, N.M., Rebecca, (Michael) Ransom, Des Moines, IA,; brothers Donald (Maryetta) Hidde, Alcester, S.D. and Howard (Margo) Hidde, New London, WI and four grandchildren, Jordan, Jesse, Joselyn and Maya. Dr. Hidde was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harold (Bonnie) Hidde, Clintonville, WI and sister Lois (Daniel) Stenson, Appleton, WI.
