Eldo C. Koenig, Ph.D., of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, went to his heavenly home July 11, 2014, at age 94. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gloria (Houting) Koenig, their two sons, Lloyd (Kalaivani) and Evan (Marcia), daughter Beth Riedel (John), brother Wesley (Mary), and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Eva Koenig, his parents, Herman C. and Clara C. (Spleth) Koenig, sisters Frieda, Esther, and Lillie, and brothers Herman E. and Harold. Dr. Koenig was born October 17, 1919, in Randolph County, Illinois and earned degrees in electrical engineering and computer sciences from Washington University in St. Louis, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He began his professional career on assignment to the U.S. War Department, Manhattan District, in work associated with development of the atomic bomb. After nineteen years with the Allis-Chalmers Corporation, he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. There he helped organize the university’s computer sciences department. Dr. Koenig was an active member of the Association for Computing Machinery, IEEE Computer Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He published over fifty works pertaining to computers and computing and was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Allis-Chalmers Fellowship Award and the Alfred Noble Prize in 1951. Funeral services for Dr. Koenig will be held at Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church, 31385 Hill Road in Hartland on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the time of the service. Dr. Koenig will be laid to rest at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Baldwin, IL on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 2:30 PM.
