Harvey Johns

Harvey Johns, 92, of Oconomowoc passed away August 28, 2010 at Lake Country Rehab Center. He was born on April 17, 1918 in Oconomowoc to Oscar and Della (Peters) Johns. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Jeannette, children, Judy Rhodee of Oconomowoc, Darcy Hunter of Casper, Wyoming, Jay (Jeanne) Johns of Oconomowoc, Marc (Nancy) Johns of Oconomowoc, Dixie (Artie) Wachter of Summerfield, FL, and Philip ?PJ? (Jill) Johns of Silver Lake OH. He is also survived by his sister Ardelle Arawinko of Madison , 13 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Harvey was preceded in death by his sister Grace, brother Allen, and son-in-laws John Hunter and Kenneth Rhodee. Harvey proudly played basketball for Carrol College and then with the Dowd Pabst team in the Land-O-Lakes league from which he was inducted into the Hall Of Fame. Post his playing days he refereed local basketball games and ran the Friday night recreation activities at the Summit Town Hall. Later he was the director of the Tuesday and Wednesday night adult recreation at the old Summit School. Harvey never lost his competitive spirit and would always have a suggestion or two for the coach, players and referee s for whatever sport was on TV. His work ethic and endurance to pursue perfection has spread throughout his family. He followed and cheered on all his kids in whatever they did and wherever they were. His children gave back in faraway places (Vista volunteer) and care giving locally (nursing, farming, and teaching). Harvey even helped many others, by taking in 4 Laotian and 2 Cuban refugees, to work on the farm and to help them get a start in America. He proudly watched or followed his kids playing volleyball, softball, skiing, field hockey and soccer. He was always very proud of his family. Harvey was also a devoted member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Delafield, Wisconsin. Harvey was a lifelong farmer and was well known in the area for his sweet corn stand that stands to this day in front of the farm. The sweet corn stand put multiple John?s family members through college while at the same time giving them an education on hard work and economics that a college course could not possibly teach. The familiar sight of Harvey making hay and delivering it will be remembered by many. Funeral services for Harvey will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. with a visitation starting at 12:00 P.M. all to be held at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Summit Cemetery.
