James L. O'Brien

James Leo O’Brien of Pompano Beach, FL died at age 90 on December 15, 2014. He is survived by his seven children; daughter, Colleen, and sons, James (Sandra), Kevin (Maura), Dennis (Diane), Daniel (Kathy), Michael (Debbie) , and Matthew (Petra); twelve grandchildren; Patrick (Jennifer), Jennifer (David) Bennett, Joshua (Sarah), Steven, David (Alison), Katie (Ryan) Montgomery, Shaun, Kelly (Andrew) Johnson, Mitchell, Erin Garlow, Riley Garlow, and Matthew; and eleven great grandchildren; Connor, Cooper Bennett, Caitlin Bennett, Jay Bennett, Issa, Page, Madalyn Montgomery, Owen Montgomery, Kylee, Aspen, and Ella Johnson. Jim grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and proudly served in the US Navy, in the Pacific Theater, during WWII on board the USS Tekesta. After his honorable discharge from the US Navy, Jim graduated from Marquette University, earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and retired as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for JH Collectibles in Milwaukee, WI. He and his wife, Margaret (Maggie) LaVonne, retired to Pompano Beach where Jim enjoyed playing golf. Jim’s Catholic faith was major part of his life. He attended the Assumption Catholic Church where he served as Eucharistic Minister. Jim also served on the Board of Governors for the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Corinthians and thoroughly enjoyed participating in their many activities. Jim loved his family and especially enjoyed large family gatherings and reunions. He was a great swing dancer and had a love for music. Jim also possessed a great sense of humor. Growing up with him or being his friend meant that you would frequently hear him tell jokes or burst into laughter. Although Jim will be missed, we will celebrate his long, full life rather than mourn his passing. The brothers want to thank Colleen and Bill for the loving and compassionate care they both provided to Dad for the last two years. Dad could not have asked for better care. A visitation will be on Friday, January 9, 2015 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Pagenkopf Funeral Home in Oconomowoc. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 12:00 noon at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Oconomowoc. Burial will follow at St. Jerome Catholic Cemetery with full Military Honors. Jim O’Brien will be laid to rest next to his wife, Margaret O’Brien.
