J. H. ?Herb? Hopkins, 86, previously of The Legacy in Lincoln, died March 30, 2010, in Lutheran Homes in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Herb was born August 12, 1923, in Aurora, Illinois, to Julian Increase and Catharine (Baldry) Hopkins. Herb graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. He received his B. A. and J. D. degrees from the University of Nebraska in 1943 and 1948 respectively. He served in the U. S. Army as a second lieutenant during World War II. Herb and Ardis ?Alex? Alexander were married in 1946 and lived together in Lincoln until Alex died in 2005. They belonged to Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, where Herb held leadership positions in both the local congregation and the national church. In his professional life, Herb began as an attorney and then rose to General Counsel and then Vice President of Ameritas, then known as Bankers Life Nebraska, before he retired in 1988. He continued in private practice with Cline, Williams, Wright, Johnson & Oldfather, L.L.P. until 1996, where he provided leadership in developing the Nebraska Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association. A member of the Nebraska and American Bar Associations, Herb was admitted to appear before the Nebraska and United States Supreme Courts. Herb?s community service enriched his life. In addition to his church, his deep community commitments included the former Lincoln General Hospital, the Community Chest, employee assistance programs, and he was among the friends of Bill W. One of Herb?s favorite mottos was ?there?s no end to the good you can do as long as you don?t care who gets the credit.? Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alex, and his brother Richard Hopkins. Herb is survived by his daughters Jackie (Dennis) Falk of Duluth, Minnesota and Chris Hopkins (Gregg Brzeski) of Oconomowoc, WI; his son David Hopkins of Mesa, Arizona; grandchildren Andrew and James Falk, Krissy (Steve) Snyder, Ellie (Brant) Abts, and Elizabeth, Andrew, Tyler, and Evan Hopkins; and great-grandchildren Katie and Gracie Abts. Herb?s family would like to thank the staff and residents of The Legacy in Lincoln and Lutheran Homes of Oconomowoc for their compassionate care and support. FUNERAL SERVICE: Herb?s memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010, in the chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 2110 Sheridan Boulevard in Lincoln. Reception with lunch will follow the service. Arrangements are by Roper and Sons Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Westminster Church or to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
