Kenneth Dean Roberts

Kenneth Dean Roberts, age 87, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2023 at Waukesha Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. Ken was born in Wichita, KS to Hugh and Maude (nee Minson) on March 15, 1936.

While Ken loved people and making them laugh, his family was everything to him. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren more than anything else. His long-time friends in the Kansas City area, as well as new friends at Shorehaven, will always remember him for his sense of humor.

Ken worked in the creative arts department for the Kansas City Star and Sun Publications during the 1970’s-1980’s. He was often asked to photograph expensive cars in nice places and Ken always enjoyed the opportunity to drive them for the weekend. He also spent several years as the photography director for Manion’s Auction House in Kansas City.

Growing up and living in Kansas for 82 years, serving the United States Navy on the USS Kidd ship and then moving to Wisconsin to be near his children in 2017, Ken was known for his incredible talent as a fine artist and photographer. He left a legacy of his artwork through the years not only as his occupation, but in his retirement he gifted paintings to the Alzheimer’s Association for its annual auction fundraisers. Additionally, he showcased his work at the Milwaukee Art Museum for the “Veteran’s Light Up the Arts” exhibit and was featured at Shorehaven for the resident gallery. Through the years, Ken also painted works of art for family and friends that have become treasures in many homes.

Ken was an avid camper and loved sailing, woodcarving, making jewelry and in his later years, traveling. He enjoyed cooking, Kansas City BBQ and even competed in the Lenexa Chili Cook Off.

The Alzheimer’s Association in Kansas City was an important organization and part of his life for over 12 years. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association (3846 W. 75th Street, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208) in his name.

Ken is preceded in death by his twin brother, Dennis; longtime partner, Shirley Mills. Ken is survived by his children, Heather (Steve) Schaefer and Jon (Jennifer) Roberts; grandchildren, Madison, Ashlyn and Lauren Schaefer. He is also survived by his extended family, Julie (Michael) Cannon and their son, Luke; along with many other family and friends.

An informal Remembrance Reception will be held on Tuesday, April 18 from 5:30pm-7:00pm at The Roehl Room at Shorehaven next to Cafe La Belle, 1306 W. Wisconsin Ave., Oconomowoc, WI 53066. We will share special memories along with his artwork as a tribute to Ken and the legacy he left us to enjoy. Light refreshments will be served.
