Nelson A. Moffat, M.D., age 82, died on Monday July 29, 2013, in Dousman, WI, following complications of a recurrent cancer of the mouth and throat. He was born March 16, 1931, and lived his early years in Elkhart, Indiana. He attended Culver Military Academy, Princeton University, and received his MD degree from the University of Chicago, School of Medicine in 1955. Following his internship at Minneapolis General Hospital (now Hennepin County Hospital) he served in the US Army as a Battalion Surgeon with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, WA. He completed his specialty training in Urology at Duke University in 1962, and was board certified in 1965. He practiced Urology at the Marshfield Clinic from 1962 until his retirement in 1990, and served that organization in many capacities, including President, Vice President, Treasurer and Chairman of the Building Committee during its first two major building projects. He chaired the Trustees of the Employees Retirement Plan of the Clinic for 25 years. He served the Marshfield community and the state of Wisconsin extensively. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the University Foundation of the UW Marshfield-Wood County Campus and chaired its Investment Committee. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of St. Joseph's Hospital. He served on the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board for 7 years, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Wisconsin Public Radio Association. He had a number of hobbies. Nelson was a Registered Piano Technician of the Piano Technicians Guild and for 25 years rebuilt, repaired, and tuned pianos throughout the Marshfield area. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, cooking, traveling, flying a light aircraft and singing. He was formerly a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marshfield and sang in its choir. His passions were classical music and especially opera. He was a remarkable man, a loving husband, father, brother and dear friend who was admired by many and will be missed by all. His wife of 56 years, Joan Moffat, died in 2010. He is survived by his sister, Grace (Eric) Semple; three children: David (Ann) Moffat of Verona, WI, Kathryn (John) Engel of Nashotah, WI, and Christopher Moffat of San Ramon, CA; and four grandchildren: Kathryn and Matthew (Erin) Engel, Mark and Ryan Moffat. There will be no visitation or services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wisconsin Masonic Home of Dousman WI, University of Wisconsin Marshfield/Wood County, or Wisconsin Public Radio Association. Donations may also be made to a charity of choice.
