It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul Richard Schmitt on April 1st 2025, at the age of 79. Born on June 15th 1945 in Linz Germany to Gunter and Sofie Schmitt. The family later embarked on a remarkable and challenging journey, at the age of 14, when they immigrated to the United States. Settling in Michigan, Paul learned what it took to adapt to his new life. Learning a new language at a new school in a new country wasn’t an easy task.
In Michigan, Paul met the love of his life, Carol. Together they enjoyed the joys of sailing and built many memories on the water. Later saying their wedding vows in front of family and friends, their love carried them to starting a family that became the center of their lives. After three years in Michigan, life took them to Wisconsin where they put down deep roots in the town of Ottawa.
Paul was a man of many interests. He found joy in collecting antiques, sailing, restoring vintage cars and expressing his creative side through wood working. Paul was an avid firearms collector and he very much enjoyed learning the history that every piece carried with it.
Paul is survived by his wife Carol of 42 years; children Paul (Sheila) and Jessi (Nathan) Mode; grandchildren Benjamin, Elody and Arthur; along with other loving family and friends.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents Gunter and Sofie Schmitt.
Paul’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Three Pillars Memory Care and to the nurses and caregivers at Aurora Summit for their outstanding care and genuine compassion. Their dedication and kindness provided comfort not only to Paul but to his family during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to charity in honor of Paul.
