Rev. David G. Schmeling

The Rev. David G. Schmeling of Oconomowoc, WI was called home to eternal glory in heaven by his Savior Jesus Christ on August 4, 2024, at the age of 88 years.

He was born in Henry, SD to Rev. Gerhard and Anna Schmeling on March 4, 1936. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley (nee Zeitler) Schmeling; children Timothy Schmeling, Rachel (Richard) Chase, Betsy (Phil) Raymond, Jonathan (Teresa) Schmeling, and Diana (Eric Struve) Schmidt; grandchildren Bradley (Jessica) Knight, Lauren Knight, Alexandra Raymond, Eliza Raymond, Jessica (Mauricio Ize) Schmeling, Emma Schmeling, Milo Sieger, Ginny Struve; great-child Aiden Garrett; brother Dr. Daniel Schmeling; sister-in-law Vicki (James) Schmeling; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Dorothy Siewert, Barbara Johne, and Carol Schmeling; brother James Schmeling; in-laws Kenneth Siewert, Harold Johne, Ellen Schmeling, and Helen Schmeling.

He graduated from Lutheran Preparatory High School and Northwestern College, both in Watertown, Wisconsin. He graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin in 1962. He served parishes in Broken Bow, Nebraska, Yale, Michigan, and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. After resigning from the pastoral ministry, he became a Planned Giving Consultant.

Visitation will be on Sunday, Aug 11, 2024, from 1 to 3pm at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1650 Brown St, Oconomowoc, WI. Church service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, or Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.
