Shirley Gourlie

Shirley Eleanor Gourlie (nee Tremaine) age 88, died on June 22, 2013 in St. Paul, MN. Loving mother, adoring grandmother, special sister and aunt, beloved teacher was born on December 13, 1924 to Earl and Isabel Tremaine. Shirley graduated from Whitewater Teacher's College and embarked on 42 years of teaching, a true calling for her. Shirley's warmth and enthusiasm made her a teacher that many remembered as their favorite. She taught in one room school houses in Pennsylvania Street, Monterey and Mapleton Schools before joining the Oconomowoc school system. She then taught at the Brown Street School and ended her career Teaching at the Ashippun School. In 1949 she married John Gourlie her partner and love in life, farming and raising their son Jay. Shirley's positive outlook and embracing spirit endeared her to many. She will be missed. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, John her husband, and sister's Francis and Lois. She is survived by her son Jay (Barb), grandchildren Justin (Patrick) and Keegan (Nathan), brother Dale Tremaine (Jane) and sister Ruth Esser (Bob). Visitation and service on Saturday, June 29 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Alderley, WI. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by an Episcopal Mass at 11:00 am. Interment at church cemetery following service. Memorials preferred to St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
