Staci O'Brien died suddenly and unexpectedly while at home this past Saturday, Sept 23rd of apparent heart failure. She was a powerhouse. Whether as a grassroots organizer, collegiate level educator, published author, political strategist, mentor, healer, partner, mother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, Staci loved deeply and fought day and night to make the world a better place.
Staci approached living with authenticity, compassion and continually renewed curiosity. She brought such a force of joy to everyone that had the pleasure of knowing her. She was thrilled to find that age 60 was so full of potential: trips on the calendar, books in early drafts, networks being built and still all the time in the world for family, whom she held as the central importance in her life even through all her other acts of service and accomplishments.
She is survived by her partner Terry, children Liam (35) and Caitlin (33), parents Grace and Terry Leigh, brother Mike, and a whole host of adopted family and friends around the globe. We are at a loss; the world will never be the same. Every life makes ripples, Staci made waves.
Staci had many causes she supported. Some favorites are below, but a donation in her name to any cause you care passionately about will be a great honor.
- Any breast cancer research organization
- Any organization that supports local democratic grassroots organizers, like Zinc Collective , her most recent employer
