Sylvia J. Quandt

Sylvia J. Quandt, age 74, of Westfield, WI entered eternal life on Sunday, March 22, 2015. She was born to Rev. August and Verna Quandt on July 5, 1940 while her dad was pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cicero, WI. Sylvia was the youngest sibling of four children. The oldest Lyle (Karyn) of Eau Claire and Joann Walla and Fae Schwefel of Oconomowoc. She is survived by nieces and nephews Sabina Walla, Gualala, CA, Tom (Laure) and Dan (Lori) Schwefel, Oconomowoc, Brian (Jeanette) Quandt, Duarte, CA, Denise Quandt, Cottage Grove, Pete (Jodi) Schwefel, Oconomowoc, Erin Quandt, Milwaukee and Adam Quandt, Duluth, MN. Sylvia was preceded in death by sister-in-law Chick Quandt, her parents, nephew Mike Schwefel and his dad, Roger. Sylvia graduated from Ashippun Elementary School, Oconomowoc High School and earned a teaching certificate in education from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, specializing in physical education. After several teaching stints in southeastern Wisconsin Sylvia accepted a position at Westfield High School in 1969. She had found her home, bought four acres of wooded land and settled into the rest of her life. Sylvia bought her horse, Pyute and German shepherd, Tyke. She enjoyed hunting and fishing and learned every trout stream in the area well. She knew where the fish were biting and on a number of occasions invited her brother, Lyle, to join her in the fun. She bought an RV and with her dog, always a German shepherd riding shotgun, traveled extensively. A must-do trip was to Minot, ND where she drove an antique tractor in the city's annual Threshing Parade for one of her many cousins. With her dog she would set up in an RV park in Florida, to escape the cold Wisconsin winters. There were times she camped at “The Cottage” a place in the Nortthwoods that had been in the family since the late 1940's. If someone said “let's go: she was ready. She traveled from Portland, OR to Key West, from Boston, MA to the southern tip of California and all places in between. She even went to Europe, spending a Fourth of July in London and Bastille Day in Paris. Her bag was always packed. Sylvia loved sports, especially the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers. She was the proud owner of the Packers, one share, and took the job seriously as she attended the yearly meetings at Lambeau Field when she could. She and her sister, Joann, attended many Bucky Badger events including the Rose Bowl in 2000. Sylvia was one of a kind. There was no maybe and she knew what she thought and you soon learned that too. During the last five years Sylvia's quality of life began to deteriorate but her spirit remained strong. The personnel at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage got to know her well. “She was fiesty and spunky” one nurse said as the others nodded in agreement. Sylvia's last years were made much better because of “The Westfield Angels” namely Marilyn Bignell, Gary Erdell and Barb Streuck, friends from her teaching days. They did many necessary things such as pick up her mail, pick up groceries, take her to doctors appointments, the things that allowed her to stay in her home which was very important to her. The family thanks them immeasurably.
