Tom was born on May 10, 1970, in Mexico City, Mexico, and moved to Brookfield, WI in 1972. After graduating from Brookfield East in 1988, he earned two degrees from UW Milwaukee, in Economics and Mass Communications. Tom then enjoyed a rewarding career, which included over 25 years at Berbee, and later with CDW after a merger between the two companies, most recently serving as a Senior Account Executive.
Tom was an amazing man, who naturally connected with people without even trying. Along with his sharp wit and insight, he was humble and authentic - the kind of person who tuned into the needs of others and provided guidance to all who asked. His personality was infectious; when you met him you remembered him. He was kind, compassionate, and always had the ability to speak his mind regardless of the circumstance. He had the courage of his convictions and was unapologetically himself 100% of the time.
Tom loved his family with everything he had. His wife and two daughters meant the world to him and were always his top priority. His love of the outdoors fueled his passion for biking, hiking and fishing, with cross-country skiing holding a special place in his heart. Tom completed the American Birkebeiner a few times as well as several Kortelopets. One of his greatest joys was passing his active lifestyle to his daughters as a teacher, coach, and enthusiastic spectator. Most importantly, Tom taught his daughters to accept every challenge and to embrace life to the fullest.
Tom will be sadly missed by his loving wife Sarah (Besch), daughters Samantha and Hailey, mother Ernestina Cousland, brother Charles (Amy) Cousland, nephews Alexander (Eve) and Carter Cousland, niece Kelsey (Matt) Lauritzen, his loving family in Mexico, as well as many, many dear friends. Tom was welcomed to heaven by his father, Charles "Pat" Cousland, brother Alexander Cousland, and in-laws Thomas and Barbara Besch.
Our lives will be quieter without him, but the memories, faith and energy of his life and love will bring great joy for all the years to come.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Catholic service from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM at St. Anthony's on the Lake in Pewaukee, WI. A private burial will take place at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
The family would like to thank all the dear friends who brought comfort, companionship, prayers, and smiles to the last leg of his journey. With a special thank you to Deacon Dennis Petri and Kathie Amidei of St. Anthony's for all their love and support.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Friends of Lapham – In Memory of Tom Cousland for the new lodge being built or the Peak Nordic Endowment fund. The Pagenkopf Funeral Home in Oconomowoc, WI, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
